Florida’s laws and regulations for motorcycle insurance can be confusing, as they are different from every other state in the U.S. Most states require bikers to carry a certain amount of motorcycle insurance. Florida does not legally require motorcycle insurance, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need it.
The amount of insurance required varies per state, but most states require bikers to carry:
- $25,000 in bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
- $10,000 in property damage
While Florida has similar mandates for car insurance, it does not extend to motorcycles. Florida also doesn’t require riders to wear a helmet unless they’re under the age of 16.
Exceptions
Nearly every law has its exceptions. Florida requires riders to carry bodily injury and property damage liability coverage for three years after they’ve been in a crash concerning traffic violations or injuries.
Also be aware that, while you don’t need motorcycle insurance to register your motorcycle, you can still be held financially responsible in case of a crash. You may be expected to provide proof of financial responsibility, as well. This means that you can show that you have the means to pay for damages you may cause while operating the motorcycle. If you can’t provide a financial responsibility certificate or self-insurance certificate, you may be required to purchase liability insurance.
What Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover in Florida?
Although Florida doesn’t require motorcycle insurance, you can still purchase full coverage just as you could in any other state. A basic motorcycle insurance policy includes:
- Comprehensive Coverage: Comprehensive coverage provides compensation if your vehicle is damaged by fire, hail, theft, vandalism and more.
- Collision Coverage: Collision coverage provides compensation for damages due to a collision with another vehicle or object.
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: This coverage provides compensation for damages if the driver you crash with doesn’t carry insurance.
- Liability: Liability coverage covers bodily injury and property damage you may cause to someone else while operating the insured motorcycle.
- Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury protection helps with medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident.
How Much is Motorcycle Insurance in Florida?
Motorcycle insurance premiums depend on a variety of factors, such as:
- Age
- Gender
- Location
- Coverage limits
- Credit score
- Driving record
- Claims history
- Value of the motorcycle
On average, however, the cost of motorcycle insurance is about $911 a year.
